How to Set Up Circadian Lighting, Room by Room

Circadian lighting sounds complicated. It is not. The whole idea is two settings: bright and cool by day, dim and warm by night, with the transition starting a few hours before bed. Everything below is just applying that to the rooms you actually use. You do not need to smart-bulb your entire house. You need the right light in the two or three rooms where you spend mornings and evenings.

A quick rule of thumb for color temperature before we go room by room: 5000K to 6500K reads as energizing daylight, 4000K is neutral, 2700K is a normal warm bulb, 2200K and below is candle-warm evening light, and under 1600K amber is the near-blue-free zone for the last hour. Bedroom: the room that matters most

This is where circadian lighting earns its keep, and where the standard smart-bulb advice quietly fails. Run your bedside lamp cool and bright in the morning if you use the bedroom to wake up, but the evening is the whole game. In the last two to three hours before sleep you want warm and dim, and in the final hour you want essentially no blue at all.

The honest setup: a tunable smart bulb in the main fixture handling the evening dim-down, plus a dedicated amber bulb in a bedside lamp for reading and wind-down. A smart bulb at its warmest still leaks blue; the amber bulb does not. If you would rather not touch the ceiling light at all, a sunrise alarm clock on the nightstand doubles as a warm evening lamp and a gentle morning wake light.

Living room: where you spend the evening

Most of your pre-bed hours happen here, in front of a screen, so it is the second priority after the bedroom. Put tunable smart bulbs in the lamps you use at night, not necessarily the ceiling can lights. Set an automation that shifts them from neutral in late afternoon to warm and dimmed after sunset. Keep the TV a bit dimmer at night and sit back from it. The light from a screen across the room is far weaker at your eye than a phone six inches from your face.

Kitchen: bright when you need it, off when you do not

The kitchen is a daytime and task room, so bright cool light during the day is fine and useful. The trap is the late-night kitchen trip under 4000K downlights, which is a blast of alertness signal right when you are trying to stay sleepy. If your kitchen lights are on a smart switch or smart bulbs, set a warm, dim "night" scene for after-dark visits. A cheap under-cabinet amber strip or a single warm bulb left on is enough to navigate without waking your brain up.

Home office: cool for focus, then hand off

If you work from home, this is where bright cool light does real good. Morning and midday, run it bright and toward daylight to support alertness and focus; this is the same signal that anchors your clock. The rule is to stop early. Shift the office to warmer tones in the last hour of work, and do not do bright cool work sessions late at night if you want to sleep after. A tunable bulb on a schedule handles the handoff for you.

Bathroom: the sneaky one

The bathroom sabotages more sleep than people realize. You brush your teeth under bright cool vanity lights at the exact moment you are trying to power down, and worse, a 3am trip flips on a floodlight and wipes out your melatonin. Two fixes: put a warm dim bulb or a smart bulb with a night scene over the vanity for evenings, and add a low amber night light for overnight trips so you never hit the main switch in the dark.

The minimum viable setup

If you do nothing else, do this: one amber bulb in the bedroom lamp for the last hour, one tunable smart bulb in the living room set to dim and warm after sunset, and bright light, ideally daylight, into your eyes each morning.
